Lipoma Removal

A Lipoma is a collection of fatty tissue that can be located in a variety of unwanted and cosmetically undesirable locations. Lipomas may show up in different areas of the body and no one knows why or where they occur. After the lipoma is removed, sutures are placed in your skin to close the incision and sometimes a small drain is left in place to evacuate any excess fluid and to close down the space where the lipoma was located. Sometimes, and rarely, these collections of fatty tissue can be malignant so they should always be sent to the pathologist for examination after they are removed.

BEFORE YOUR SURGERY: Most of the time, Lipomas can safely be removed in the office with local anesthesia and with minimal blood loss. For the smaller and easy to excise lipomas, you can stay awake during the entire procedure and surgery and go home right afterwards.

Other times for lipomas that are larger or more complicated in their appearance or location, additional sedation or anesthesia may be required to keep you comfortable while it is removed. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed, not even water or medications. For bigger and complicated lipomas, this surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, and you should be able to go home after your procedure. The surgery itself generally takes 1-2 hours, including any additional procedures being performed . Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
