Breast Implant Removal
Sometimes either because of pain, discomfort, asymmetry or personal dissatisfaction, breast implant removal surgery is desired. There are other reasons (both personal and medical) for breast implants to be removed such as rupture, capsular contracture, seroma formation, infection or mal-position too. Usually the original incisions that were used to put the implants in are the same ones that are used to take the implants out. Sometimes a small drain is left in place for a few days as well but this depends on the specific circumstances. Sometimes the implants are able to be removed in the office with local anesthesia. If a capsule has developed around the implant, this should be removed as well and is best performed with anesthesia in the operating room for patient comfort and safety. In any case, the decision, to have breast implants removed is a personal and customized one, and Dr Cousins can discuss with you the variety of options that are best for you.
During your consultation, Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. will examine you, discuss your specific aesthetic goals, provide recommendations as far as incision size and location, the need for a drain and other critical aspects of the surgery. Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. and his staff will be happy to answer any and all questions you may have.
BEFORE YOUR SURGERY: On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed, not even water or medications. Breast implant removal surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, but sometimes patients stay overnight for observation. Out-of-town patients may stay in one of our overnight recovery suites with a nurse that is available. The surgery itself generally takes 1-2 hours, including any additional procedures being performed . After your surgery, you will be able to go home or stay in the overnight facility with office follow-up soon thereafter. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
