Breast Implant Removal

Sometimes either because of pain, discomfort, asymmetry or personal dissatisfaction, breast implant removal surgery is desired. There are other reasons (both personal and medical) for breast implants to be removed such as rupture, capsular contracture, seroma formation, infection or mal-position too. Usually the original incisions that were used to put the implants in are the same ones that are used to take the implants out. Sometimes a small drain is left in place for a few days as well but this depends on the specific circumstances. Sometimes the implants are able to be removed in the office with local anesthesia. If a capsule has developed around the implant, this should be removed as well and is best performed with anesthesia in the operating room for patient comfort and safety. In any case, the decision, to have breast implants removed is a personal and customized one, and Dr Cousins can discuss with you the variety of options that are best for you.
