Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is usually done in coordination with your surgical oncologist. Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. has worked with several surgical oncologists across south Florida, and is accredited at most institutions and hospital across south Florida. As a Board Certified General Surgeon (ABS) and Board Certified Plastic Surgeon (ABPS), Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. has treated and cared for patients with breast cancer and recognizes and understands the not only the aesthetic goals, but also the overall health and lifestyle needs of patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

There are a variety of options for patients undergoing mastectomy and desiring unilateral or bilateral breast reconstruction. Two-stage, tissue expander based implant reconstruction is a popular option that is usually performed immediately after your mastectomy at the hospital. Depending on a variety of other factors, immediate placement of implants, rotational use of muscles in the region such as the latissimus muscle or free tissue transfer such as a deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap may be used to add volume and contour to your breast.

During your consultation, Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. will examine you, discuss your specific aesthetic goals, provide recommendations and answer any and all questions you may have. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed, not even water or medications.

Breast reconstruction surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed usually as an inpatient procedure, but sometimes after the initial surgery, and after the second stages of the surgery, the patient may require an overnight stay for observation. The surgery itself generally takes 2-3 hours, and may be longer depending on what type of procedure and whether there are any additional procedures being performed . Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
