Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a common surgery performed to remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal area. Over time and with pregnancy or after massive weight loss, the skin and abdominal muscles may stretch or weaken. An abdominoplasty removes the excess skin and fat from this region, and the abdominal muscles may be tightened to return your waistline to that slim, hour-glass shape that is desirable. The incisions are placed in the waist crease or bikini line, and sometimes the surgery is combined with liposuction or liposculpting to target additional trouble areas. In some cases, a mini-abdominoplasty may be used with a smaller incision also hidden along the waist or bikini line.

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, in a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgery center or outpatient hospital. The surgery itself generally takes 2-3 hours, and may be longer depending on whether there are any additional procedures being performed in combination with your abdominoplasty surgery. Sometimes surgical drains are left along the lower portion of your incision, this is done to reduce the chances of fluid build up after your surgery. These are removed in the office after about a week. In addition, you will have a comfortable compression garment to wear after your surgery, which you will be fitted for before your surgery. After your surgery, you will be able to go home or stay in the overnight facility with office follow-up the following day with Dr. Cousins. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients are able to return to work after about 1-2 weeks.

During your consultation, Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. will examine you, discuss your specific aesthetic goals, provide recommendations for surgery and answer any and all questions you may have. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed by mouth, not even water or medications.
