Earlobe Repair Surgery
Earlobe repair surgery can be customized to repair the damaging effects of ear ring tears and stretching that has occurred over time from jewelry or trauma mishaps to the ears. Earlobe repair can be performed in the office in about an hour with local anesthesia in our clean, sterile, state-of-the-art environment. A combination of absorbable and removable sutures are used to re-create an aesthetically appearing earlobe. During in office procedure, a small portion of skin tissue is removed from within the torn portion of the ear lobe and stitches or sutures are placed to help close up the defect in the earlobe. The sutures are removed after 1-2 week office follow-up and earrings and re-piercing are avoided for about 6-8 weeks after the procedure to maximize healing and appearance.
Also known as an otoplasty, various ear surgeries and techniques have been designed to help correct the unwanted appearance of certain features of ears. Sometimes the ears project too far forward, and this can be caused by a number of different reasons. Also known as prominent ear deformity, this can be a source of teasing and embarrassment for young children. Incisions are made on the back of the ear and sutures or stitches are placed within the ear cartilage to reshape and remold the ear and give it a more natural less pronounced, stuck out look. Sometimes a earmuff like dressing is worn after a ear surgery for a week or so to help protect the repair, but this is usually not needed with earlobe repair surgery which can be done in the office.
During your consultation, Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. will examine you, discuss your specific aesthetic goals, provide recommendations and answer any and all questions you may have. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed, not even water or medications.
Otoplasty ear surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, but sometimes patients stay overnight for observation. Out-of-town patients may stay in one of our overnight recovery suites with a nurse that is available. The surgery itself generally takes 1-2 hours, including the ear surgery itself and any additional procedures being performed . Earlobe repair surgery can be done in the office with local anaesthesia so you will be able to go home after the surgery. After your surgery, you will be able to go home or stay in the overnight facility with office follow-up soon thereafter. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
