Hand Rejuvenation
Hand rejuvenation is designed to help restore a more youthful appearance to your hands. Over time, your hands may become older looking as they have lost volume in the tissues beneath the skin. When this happens, the veins, tendons and bones appears right underneath the skin as they have lost the youthful fullness and volume of the deeper tissue beneath the skin. For some patients, fat transfer may be beneficial to help restore more youthful, fuller less-aged hands. By using your own fat cells that are harvested from your hips or thigh region, the fat can be purified and then injected to specific areas to help reduced the appearance of wrinkles and provide a more healthy voluminous look to your hands.
Fat transfer involves harvesting your body’s own fat cells with liposuction. After the fat cells are harvested, they are separated and purified, and then injected into specific areas in need of correction or enhancement. Fat transfer is useful for correction of breast asymmetries, liposculpting contour irregularities and other areas such as for hand rejuvenation as the fat can be injected into areas of the hand to give a more youthful, less wrinkled appearance.
During your consultation, Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. will examine you, discuss your specific aesthetic goals, provide recommendations for surgery and answer any and all questions you may have. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed by mouth, not even water or medications.
Fat transfer for hand rejuvenation is performed under general anesthesia or sometimes with local anesthesia so you will be pain free during your procedure. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, but sometimes patients stay overnight for observation in a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgery center. Out-of-town patients may stay in one of our overnight recovery suites with a nurse that is available. The surgery itself generally takes 1-2 hours, and may be longer depending on whether there are any additional procedures being performed in combination with your surgery. After your surgery, you will be able to go home or stay in the overnight facility with office follow-up soon thereafter. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
