Nipple and areolar revision surgery may be beneficial for some patients as sometimes either because of natural differences in the nipple or areolar size, shape or with previous surgery, asymmetries may be a significant source of patient concern and anxiety. These concerns may be addressed as part of a breast lift or mastopexy surgery which serve to lift the breast and often involve incisions near or around the nipple and areolar skin. Nipple creation surgery is performed often times with patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer as a portion of their reconstruction. This surgery is performed a few months after the permanent implants are in place, and the skin on the breast is used to make anew nipple.

Nipple and areolar creation/revision surgeries are performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, but sometimes patients stay overnight for observation in a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgery center. Out-of-town patients may stay in one of our overnight recovery suites with a nurse that is available. The surgery itself generally takes 2-3 hours, and may be longer depending on whether there are any additional procedures being performed in combination with your surgery. After your surgery, you will be able to go home or stay in the overnight facility with office follow-up soon thereafter. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
