Mole or Skin Lesion Removal

A “mole” or Nevus or other skin lesion is a collection of abnormal growth of skin or pigmented skin cells in your dermis. These may show up in different areas of the body, and no one knows exactly why or where they show up, but mostly they arise in sun exposed areas or in those with a family history “moles”. Sometimes, and rarely, these “moles” or lesions can be malignant like melanoma or basal/squamous cell cancer so they should always be sent to the pathologist for examination after they are removed.

BEFORE YOUR SURGERY: Most of the time, these “moles” or skin lesions can safely be removed in the office with local anesthesia in the office and with minimal blood loss. For the smaller and easy to excise “Moles” and skin lesions, you can stay awake during the entire procedure and surgery and go home right afterwards.

Other times for those that are larger or more complicated in their appearance or location, additional sedation or anesthesia may be required to keep you comfortable while it is removed. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed, not even water or medications. For bigger and complicated lesions, this surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, and you should be able to go home after your procedure. The surgery itself generally takes 1-2 hours, including any additional procedures being performed . Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
