Facelift
Also known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift helps to reverse the signs of aging in the face which are usually due to a variety of reasons such as gravity and sun- exposure. As the facial tissues begin to sag and drop over time, wrinkles and fat deposits become more pronounced in certain areas giving a “worn-out” tired and aged look. In certain areas around the nose and cheeks, these folds can become much more visible and noticeable. Dropping around the mouth and chin causes “jowls” which can be addressed with a facelift to help restore the youthful appearance of the face. Some of the goals of a facelift surgery are to reverse the effects of gravity while rebalancing the loss of volume in aesthetic facial regions thus restoring the more youthful appearance while avoiding the “windblown” or “pulled” appearance.
A rhytidectomy or facelift is not simply just a lift of the skin of the face. Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. uses specialized, modern minimally invasive techniques to rebalance and lift the deeper structures of the face to provide a lasting more subtle look. While minimizing surgical incisions to hide and conceal scars as well as to minimize recovery time, individualized facelift surgery is specifically performed to add volume and suspend the tissues that have fallen down to counter the effects of gravity and facial tissue descent. In order for you to achieve your optimum aesthetic outcome, your facelift procedure will be customized and individualized and may include additional procedures with it such as a brow lift, blepharoplasty, neck lift or addition of dermal fillers or Botox.
Facelift/Rhytidectomy surgery is performed under general anesthesia so you will be asleep during the entire surgery. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, but sometimes patients stay overnight for observation. Out-of-town patients may stay in one of our overnight recovery suites with a nurse that is available. The surgery itself generally takes several hours, including the facelift and any additional procedures being performed . After your surgery, you will be able to go home or stay in the overnight facility with office follow-up soon thereafter. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling for about a week or two after surgery, but most patients can usually return to work soon thereafter.
During your consultation, Dr. Benjamin J. Cousins M.D. will examine you, discuss your specific aesthetic goals, provide recommendations and answer any and all questions you may have. On your day of surgery, you will need to have been fasting for at least 8 (eight) hours prior to your surgery. This includes avoiding any food or drink and generally nothing is allowed, not even water or medications.
